Which conflict does this passage from Helen Keller's The Story of My Life reveal? Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding-line, and had no way of knowing how near the harbour was. "Light! give me light!" was the wordless cry of my soul, and the light of love shone on me in that very hour.

The conflict that this passage reveals is that first, there was confusion in the character when she says, "when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, ..." That means the character was immersed in confusion, that there was no way out to see clearly her life and that she was waiting uncertainly for something to happen, let us see what the sea brings that can take me out of this uncertainty. It also reflects she needed guidance, "only I was without compass or sounding-line, ..." With this sentence, she reflects two crucial aspects of her life, first that she was desperately looking for guidance, for a feeling that could take her into the right path again. Second, that this time she did not have education to her side to guide her, it means that the character, despite her confusion, she certainly knew that knowledge was a secure arrow that could take her into the right direction, but at the same time she knew that education was not enough. "Light! give me light" Finally with this sentence she transmits us directly what she was looking for, that perhaps the light of knowledge was not enough, that she was missing something, yes that was the light of love.
