Tone is the author's attitude toward the story. You could have a tone that is: happy, terrifying, convoluted, serious, disheartened, etc. As you read, what do each of the poems say about America being a place for home, school, etc. and how is America seen as an idea (or a thought). For example, to some people who do not live here, to hear or say "American" is meant as freedom, opportunity, fun. It is also seen as home to many with different types of activities, weather, etc.
