Why did Esperanza and her father lie down on the ground?

Her father says that he is teaching her to hear the heart of the valley, but she becomes impatient and gives up. What he is truly trying to teach her is to understand her 'connection' with the vineyard, the Earth, and her heritage. She is too young to understand what he is really about.
