The Harrowing of Hell is a doctrine (belief) in Christian theology which states that Jesus descended into Hell (Hades, Underworld) before being resurrected. There, he brought salvation to the righteous who had died since the beginning of the world (the non-Christians). In this way, the stigma of the Original Sin was removed from the dead, which allowed Jesus to defeat Satan and allowing the abandoned souls to ascend to Heaven. There are no explicit New Testament references of Christ descending to the Underworld. This absence in the Scripture has given rise to controversy about the truth of this doctrine. It is unclear how it became part of the Apostels' Creed.
