Why does Mr. Gilmer act upset when Tom says he felt sorry for mayella?

    Part of white American prejudice in the South was that a black man did not have the right to feel sorry for a white girl or woman. Many whites felt that white women were not only better than black men but the two were even forbidden to be thought of in a similar context.
