An author will use ellipses to omit words within a direct quote or for the omission of sentences within a paragraph. In writing, an author will

use an ellipsis to indicate that the speaker had trailed off or left the thought unfinished. For example, " ... but the skipper knew he was headed for trouble." This would be an ellipsis used to omit words in a direct quote. Therefore the answer is true.
