Gregor is the main character in Kafka's novella "The Metamorphosis". Gregor and his story are used by the author to criticize society and the imposed unhappiness and lack of fulfillment we are forced to accept as reality.

As many people back when the novella was written - and even today -, Gregor has a job he hates. He despises his boss and dreams of the day he will no longer have to work for him. The only reason for Gregor to keep on working is the fact that he has to pay his parents' debts. However, keeping that job makes him utterly dissatisfied with his life.

Gregor is a relatable character. Readers can empathize with this type of agony, which is common when we need the money. Gregor's transformation into a bug is nothing more than a representation of how society views him, of how insignificant he is.
