How does our modern society value connection between people? Is this similar to how Donne conceived of it?

Our modern society values connection between people through various means such as the social media, the number of people both people has as a mutual friend, the family based friendship which exist among both family e. t. c.

Unfortunately, this differs from how Donne concieved connection to be between two people in a given location.
