The speaker establishes in these lines that despite being blind, he can "see" again, through what he is touching and feeling.

Explanation:

This poem is located on Ambon Island, where the narrator tells how he has lost his sight, his family, his home and his sketchbooks. From one day to the next, he lost everything.

At the end of the poem, the narrator describes how something new suddenly happens to him. By touching a shell with his hand, he can feel and imagine everything again, it is as if he can see despite being in the dark, and this is a great surprise for him.
