    D. Carol values her money more than her convictions about safety

    Explanation:

From the passage, it is evident that Carol is more conscious about the money she had to spend on the parking fees than her own safety in travelling in a convertible. Before, she rejected James's offer to give her a ride, citing safety issues and that she would never ride in a convertible whether the top is up or not. But when the issue is between riding the same car and paying parking fees, she decided too ride it just so she can save some money. In the face of spending money, the author thinks that Carol can forego her convictions of safety as long as she will be able to not spend money at all.
