Through a series of confrontations with her son and others, her innocence is threatened and she is physically and mentally shattered.

    Explanation:

This is the best way to describe how Julian's mother changes throughout the story. Julian's mother is quite racist, and Julian is bothered by this. He decides to give his mother a lesson, which leads to several altercations with her son and others. Julian's mother ends up beign greatly affected by these, and instead of the positive change Julian desired, the encounters leave the mother physically and mentally shattered.
