daniel keyes' short story flowers for algernon displays the unfair treatment of mentally challenged people by showing how charlie is treated, not only at his workplace but seemingly everywhere he goes. charlie, the protagonist, suffers from severe mental deceleration which causes his "friends" and peers to mock him behind his back and often even to his face. by displaying this kind of treatment in the story, keyes is portraying charlie's oppressors as evil and unfair people which indirectly shows he disagrees with those who mock the mentally challenged.
