Both Elinor and Marianne were surprised and heartbroken by Willoughby's engagement. Willoughby had given Marianne affection and gave way to intentions of a possible engagement too her. To them, it was completely out of the blue and not expected at all. Others that were watching Marianne and Willoughby togetherassumed both were crazy for one another. Both seemed to spend every waking hour together. This is a repeated theme because it is the reality of life. Emotions tend to skew ones view of the reality of a situation. Many times those we trust the most can be very deceitful. Not everything in life is as it seems. Love can be one sided without us realizing it on time. Life is not fair even if sometimes it seems perfect. You can go years living with someone and only knowso little about them and their inner feelings. On the other hand, you can also spend a small amount of time with one individual and create an everlasting connection. People tend to change over time affected by the world and we have to find the strenght to see it clearly.
