For electricity to flow through the light bulb and light it up, a complete circuit is required. If you connect only one wire between the bulb and the battery, there is no complete circuit. Therefore, no light with come from the bulb. There must be two wires from the battery to the bulb to supply a voltage and a return path for the light to work.
