The early blacksmith was a muscular man covered in soot. He toiled all day, making and repairing metal objects such as pots and pans, farm implements and tools, fencing, horseshoes, and nails. His one-room shop was kept dark so that the blacksmith could gauge the temperature of the metal by its color as it heated in the forge.
