They hoped to die peacefully, without agony.

    Explanation:

Life in the concentration camps was very difficult and the prisoners lived in constant forced labor, unimaginable terrible living conditions, torture, starvation, cold and a constant threat of death that could happen at any time, either by gas cameras, by disease and constant abuse, whether by the weapons of the Nazis. The prisoners lived in such torturous situations that they expected relief from death, their hope being that they could die in peace without agony.

The literal definition of reprieve is to cancel or postpone. If prisoners from a concentration camp are hoping for a reprieve from death, that either means that they hope to escape or be sent to labor opposed to a death sentence (ie gas chambers)
