Arkadyevitch was a social aristocrat. He practiced adultery. Though his servants knew that he had an illegal affair, they wanted to be loyal to him and did not reveal anything to his wife. Arkadyevitch was not guilty, but was happy and anxious about the future. He did not have any good virtues but he was not a bad person. He did not take anything in life seriously and his aim was to enjoy life. The main aim of the narrator is to inform people that humans should be committed to deeply rooted values and should maintain humanity.
