Indeed, Krebs was a completely different person from who he was before leaving for the war. He has gone through several atrocities and hardships which have changed him. However, his hometown, his family and his friends have not been through the same experience and they have not changed. Although he is somewhat relieved to be back home and meet his family and friends again; he is initially unable to speak about what he went through. When he is finally able o speak about it people are not willing to listen anything other than what confirms their own assumptions. This is the main reason why he is dissatisfied. He has lost his innocence and cannot bear the innocence of his family and friends, because it reminds him who he was and that person is gone, good as dead.
