    Explanation:

"Lift Every Voice and Sing," was originally a poem written in 1900 by writer and activist James Weldon Johnson for a program to celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday. It came along after Reconstruction, when a newly woken black race was searching for an identity - just as Jim Crow was substituting slavery. So powerful is the song that it is frequently referred to as the "Black National Anthem," though its composer mentioned to it simply as a hymn.
