Traditionally, sonnets use iambic pentameter. This means that each line consists of five pairs of syllables (an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable); so each line has ten syllables. Since a sonnet has fourteen lines, and ten syllables per line, an entire sonnet consists of 140 syllables.
