    On the 22nd Jim awakens. He hears voices and realizes that something has simply occurred. Jake and Otto are in the kitchen looking drained, and Grandmother continues going to God.

    At last, Grandfather clarifies that Mr. Shimerda is dead, and that Otto and Jake have been at the Shimerdas a large portion of the night. He demonstrates to him that Ambrosch is there snoozing.

    Everybody eats and Jim knows not to make an excessive number of inquiries.

    Otto reveals to Jim's granddad that nobody heard the firearm go off. Grandma thinks about how such a sweet man could incur this much inconvenience on his loved ones.

    Fuchs says it was no mischance, that the man shaved and got dressed all pleasant before he shot himself in the head. Since the sum total of what he had was a long rifle, he needed to utilize his huge toe to pull the trigger.
