Golding uses The Lord of the Flies as a symbol of the devil and savagery throughout the novel. In doing so, the Lord of the Flies mocking grin grows as "the skull lay in two pieces, its grin now six feet across". Even after lashing out at the skull its grin only grows wider, and Jack only grows more savage.
