The English language contains words from many cultures because of the way it originated. English originally came from a mixture of various languages, including Germanic, Anglo-Saxon and Latin languages. Moreover, in recent years, English has adopted many words of foreign origin, mainly due to the rise of globalization.

The English language is based on Latin, as well as Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Romansh (and possibly Walloon).

Certain words have carried over from these languages.
