Main idea between empathy and sympathy

Sympathy is the ability to feel for someone else and take pity on them or feel bad for them because of some misfortune. Whereas empathy is the ability to feel with them. It is when a person can not only "feel bad" for someone else, but understand and connect with the emotions and pain they have.
