    Answer: Holmes explains that he had realized that to develop an ethnography of suffering and migration, he needed to witness by himself the border crossing that causes so much suffering to Latin American migrants.

    Explanation:

    That's why he joined a group o people attempting to illegally cross the border from Mexico to Arizona, and ended up arrested and imprisoned by Border control, while the rest of the group was deported back to Mexico.
