Prowess, or being skillful is a value that affects Gawain and the Green Knight. Gawain becomes more skillfull when he accepts the challenge from the Green Knight. This is a supernatural character that breaks into King Arthur's court and challenges the king and his men. Gawain accepts the challenge. He has to meet him in an year's time to recieve a blow in return of the blow the Green Knight has just recieved from Arthur. Arthur has just cut his head. Arthur got angry when the Green Knight challenged him. After a year, Gawain starts his journey to fulfill his promise. He is loyal to his own word. This is another value of chivalry. As he encounters many difficulties on this journey, some people ask him to stay in their castle. In the castle, Gawain meets a married couple and an old woman. The host, who is Bertilak, is a courtous and skillful man. He goes hunting every day and asks his guest, Gawain, to exchange his winnings at the end of each day. Bertilak has his preys to give to Gawain but Gawain has just got kisses. Kisses he has got from the host's wife. Then, they exchange dead animals and kisses. However, Gawain does not exchange a green girgle the wife has given him. The woman has told him to keep the green girgle since it will protect him against any danger. When the moment of meeting the Green Knight arrives, the Knight gives Gawain two false blows. Yet, he feigns a third blow and makes Gawain bleed. Gawain gets furious because the Knight has broken the contract. Finally, the Green Knight reveals the truth; he has given him a third blow because Gawain has lied to him. He did not give him the green girgle when they were at the castle; the host, Bertilak, and himself were the same person. Gawain gets shocked but accepts his sin. This is also a value of chivalry. Accepting his sinful act makes Gawain more noble. Moreover, Gawain and the Green Knight have kept their words.
