Mother's demands came in a hoarse monotone that sounded like crumbling paper. She demanded unusual things such as tea from partially ripened berries and the meat from a slightly mature lamb. I attempted to meet all of her requirements, but I was always met with some dissatisfaction. "I will try again Mother," I said one day when she turned her head at a finely adorned sandwich that I had made for her. "Get Walter to make my food," Mother said as she shooed me away with her feeble hand. My stomach sank. I struggled to find a proper response. 1.
