Mary Jackson was an African American mathematician and aerospace engineer at the NACA. She basically fought discrimination to earn advanced engineering degrees that few women and African Americans had ever earned.

Katherine Johnson is an African-American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U. S. manned spaceflights. She showed her superiors how detailed and reliable a female mathematician can be.
