The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

In Chapter 1, we only meet Gatsby towards the end. As Nick heads home, he spies on his neighbour, Gatsby, as he can see him from his house. Gatsby is standing in front of the water, his arms stretched in front of him as if reaching for the green light at the end of the dock, towards Daisy and Tom's house. This action foreshadows the rest of the novel: Gatsby trying to reach Daisy.
