The meaning of obliterate is that the black print can not be removed or eliminated. In "The Devil and Tom Walker," greedy Tom makes a deal with the devil, embodied in Old Scratch and "The Black Man." His business succeeds, but his wife is killed, and in the end of the story the devil comes for him.
