The book 'You Can't Sleep Here' describes the whereabouts of three homeless women and their children. We have Thea, and her three children: Tommy, Toby, and Tabitha. Then Lucy, just released from prison, and her two boys: Russell, who is in foster care, and Earl, who remains with her. And last, Jill, who takes care of her stepson Daniel and her daughter, Samantha. Her husband Jackson is in jail, therefore, she faces the situation by herself.

The women describe how they coped with being homeless and found ways to refuge them and their families from warm summers or cold winters. For example, staying at a Wallmarket for hours searching for the air conditioning or to use the restrooms.
