The tragedy of commons is when one person acts contrary to the common good of a community in an effort to fulfill their own desires. This can completely destroy a civilization. For example, if one man decides to let his cows graze on common, public land that is used by all, these cows could destroy any chances of growing crops there for an entire season or longer, which will take away the produce from all families benefiting off that land, and the entire community would starve.
