the speaker visualises American identity as unifed (that is a state of being whole, unity and oneness) but yet it is quite different. the phrase in the poem "varied carols" talks about an american that shares a common vision with others but uses different methods just to achieve those goals. Americans are singing together, but each person is singing his or her own "varied carol" of the American song.
