In the short story "The Open Window", the line that foreshadows the trick the niece will play is the following "Then you know practically nothing about my aunt?' pursued the self-possessed young lady." This line shows that first the niece wants to make sure that Mr. Nuttel doesn't know her aunt before playing the trick. Opions 2 and 3 already narrate the "invented" story told by the nice. Option 1 introduces the niece with Mr. Nuttel but still she doesn't know if he had met her aunt before.
