Counterclaim-a claim set up in opposition to another, esp by the defendant in a civil action against the plaintiff. Or to set up (a claim) in opposition to another claim.

Rebuttal-an act of rebutting, as in a debate. Going against another claim.

A counterclaim is when you introduce the opposite of your claim

ex. Claim: The girl's actions were justified

Counterclaim: Some might say that her actions weren't justified.

A rebuttal, on the other hand, is when. you justify your argument in a debate, with some sort of evidence

ex. Person 1: I believe that pie is the best dessert on earth

P2 (rebuttal) : Cake is the best dessert because 75% of people at S. Corner Market purchase a cake.
