This question refers to an episode in which H. G. Well's novel The War of the Worlds (1898) was read on the radio by actor and future filmmaker Orson Welles. The book tells the story of an alien invasion in Southern London.

The work was broadcasted by The Mercury Theatre on the Air on October 30, 1938. It became famous for causing panic among the listeners who believed the story to be news. This was partly achieved by changing the verbs to the present tense, which made the story more realistic.
