    I think it's this one:

    "By nightfall he was fatigued, footsore, famished. The thought of his wife and children urged him on."

    "urged him on" suggests that he's going somewhere, and that he needs motivation to go there. It seems that he's on the edge of survival: he's fatigued, famished, and where he's going is where his salvation likely is.
