There are many reasons why some Americans were against the construction of the Statue of Liberty.

Some mention the cost - it was very pricey to build such a huge monument that would exist for centuries to come. Some were against it because it was foreign - it was actually a gift from France, with America paying only for the pedestal. The French were supporters of the American fight for freedom, so they gave them this gift. However, many were opposed to it because the designer wasn't American - his name was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.
