Argus was a monster from Greek Mythology who was said to have 100 eyes. He was used by Hera to maintain watch over lo. It was an appropriate name for a newspaper because they report news and events and actions that occur within an area and to report such things the newspaper has to be alert and watchful like Argus. So like the name Argus gives them like a title and a goal to give the news correctly and a source of creditability by comparing themselves to something well known and useful.
