Their is a village close by, but there are no large cities for many miles. Is this sentence correct in grammar?

    No it is not because of "Their ... " It would be there instead of their because Their represents a possessiveness of something and "Their" cannot possess ''is"

    No, because the wrong "their" is used. Instead, the sentence should be:

    There is a village close by, but there are no large cities for many miles.
