A poet might choose to use a sonnet because of the meter, structure, and rhyme scheme. A sonnet consists of 14 lines and has a specific rhyme scheme. A sonnet also has to be in iambic pentameter. The poet might like the fluid, flowing feeling of a sonnet. A poet that chooses a sonnet might choose it for the harmonious, melodic sound.

A poet might choose a free verse poem because it does not have as many rules. This makes it much more easier because it doesn't have to rhyme and it doesn't have to be in iambic pentameter.
