In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout is intrigued by the reasons Atticus gives for defending Tom, especially the final one: "I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again." What can be inferred about why Atticus would say such a thing?

    If he can't defend a man just because of the color of his skin then jet and scout would not have any reason to respect him
