well at the beginning and towards the middle his meditative, scholar look became an evil one since he is set on seeking revenge on hester and dimmesdale but towards the end he seems to become an old pitiful man. hester interprets his changes during the seven years that passed as him becoming a sad, pitiful man becuz he was bent on revenge. he became strange, got more wrinkles and his intellectual, calm and quiet look was replaced by his new alert, and guarded look
