What is the main purpose of the falling action in a short story

The main purpose of the falling action in a short story is to build up to the result of the problem. The falling action shows the reader a build up to the "conclusion" and resolution (although the problem does not always have to be particularly solved) of the problem. It shows how the characters got to the resolution. (Although, some stories do end at a climax.)
