    World War II had major impact on Kurt Vonnegut's life and writing. Vonnegut was the son of German immigrants, yet enlisted in the US army in 1943 to fight against the Nazis during the war. While in Germany, he was captured and brought to Dresden, where he witnessed a massive Allied attack on the city in 1945. After evacuation, he returned to America after the war.
