Three examples of irony are situational, verbal, and dramatic irony. Situational irony is where actions or events have the opposite outcome of what they were expected to be. An example of this is, "A plumber works on leaky faucets and pipes all day, but then comes home to find his own pipe is busted." Verbal irony is where somebody says the opposite of what they mean. An example of this is, "A mom walks into her son's messy room and states, 'Wow, you deserve the award for having the cleanest room." Finally there is dramatic irony which is when the reader of a text knows something that the character does not. An example is: "The reader knows that there is a storm heading their way, but the children on the playground do not."
