What if you were alive but "slept through" an event such as the American Revolution (or the events of 9/11, the Vietnam War, or any number of other transformative conflicts) ? What are the consequences of being apathetic or passive about public and personal life? To what extent, are you a participant in your own times or life?

If you are passive, then in a way, you don't really care. but as an American citizen, you should totally care. some consequences can be that you miss out on things if you can end up getting hurt too. as I mentioned, you r an American citizen (if you live in America of course), so that's how you r a participant. and another way is by doing everyday things like going to school and/or work. I hope my answer is good enough for you, for im not sure what I'm talking about ... at least I don't think.
