    "They used to go up like great lilies and snapdragons and laburnums of fire and hang in the twilight all evening" (page 5)

    "the door opened onto a tub-shaped hall like a tunnel" (page 1)

    "it had a perfectly round door like a porthole" (page 1)

    "as he came hurtling down like a thunderbolt" (page 107 ch 6)

    lots of others ... similes have the words "as" and "like" to compare one thing to something else to give emphasis to the description.
