In this excerpt, Huck uses hyperbole, or extreme exaggeration, when describing the stench he encounters in the barrel. Obviously he does not literally mean that 64 dead cats were in there, but it sounds funny to hear him describe the smell in that way. As a result, Twain shows how Huck is able to find some humor in even the most disgusting of situations.
