Hamlet Act 1 scene 1-4 Most of the advice Polonius gives Laertes concerns etiquette and ways to make a good impression on other people. In my opinion, I believe that Polonius gave his best advice at the very end when he states, "This above all, to thine own self be true." Although this line may seem cheesy at first glance, I think that it is exceptionally intricate, and despite being overused, is quite profound in substance. Being one's self can be extremely difficult at times, but will really be the only thing that will provide true happiness in the end. It also allows the person to become much more genuine in their actions by allowing themselves to follow their instincts and self-evident truths. Being a good person also implies that one is a free thinker and can abide by their own principles, and not solely rely on the imposing views of others. In Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken," he applies this exact principle, as he describes that he is able to eventually chose the right path for himself through knowledge of this concept. By knowing oneself, it gives freedom to the individual, as it allows them to freely listen to the opinions of others, while having the capacity to make their own calculated decisions. Heeding to this advice would not only allow Laertes to became a more morally obligated man by giving the opportunity to listen to his own sense of humanity and justice, but it was also further his position as a wise human being by preserving him the ability to think for himself.

"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle

It is also important for me to mention that I believe that being a "good" person does not mean that you are a morally correct person, although virtue does hold a strong position. Being a good person to me also implies that you are a person who is intelligent, and knowledgeable of the world around you. Someone who is complete cannot be completely dependent on others, especially when it comes to the principles of the mind.
